Trump's ego and Netanyahu's obvious influence over Trump's policy on Iran, a big obstacle to a possibility of a new Iran-U.S nuclear deal.
Is president Trump really interested in any form of agreement with Iran?
Even as I write this, the United States and Iran have just traded blows almost 50 days into a ceasefire agreed upon after intense 40 days of airstrikes on each other's infrastructure. This, amidst intense discussions on how to peacefully open the strait of Hormus and work out a framework on how to permanently end hostilities between the U.S and Iran. Then, the U.S secretary of state, Marco Rubio pops up and threatens that the U.S would open the strait "one way or the other." Mr. Rubio said this while implying that the United States had no need of negotiating with Iran on how to open the strategic water way and that they would rather use their military might to do so. The following day, the U.S attacks Iran's Port City of Bandar Abbas and shoots down 5 drones that it claims were distracting shipping in the strait of Hormus. Iran quickly retaliates by striking a U.S base in Kuwait.
This was not the first time the world was hearing about skirmishes between the U.S and Iran since the announcement of the ceasefire in April. There has always been reports of Iran defence systems engaging hostile aircraft in its airspace, sometimes shooting them down.
Sanctions, military strikes, embargos. Embargos, strikes, sanctions. That seems to be President Donald Trump's standard approach on Iran. Mr. Trump seems to arrogantly believe that Iran is not worthy a deal with the mighty U.S. He seems to believe that he can thump Iran into submission. This is seen from his background of always backtracking from negotiations and opting for aggressive approaches on Iran.
Since his first term in 2016, the Trump administration has only been aggressive towards Iran, from the cancellation of the JCOPOA agreement earlier initiated by President Obama, to the assassination of Iran's political , military leaders, attempts to isolate Iran globally, a string of sanctions, etcetera. Please read my earlier article on Trump's aggressive policy on Iran here:

Trump has not once, not twice but many a time used negotiations as a pretext to further push his military campaigns against the Islamic Rempiblic of Iran.
A statement by Iran's foreign affairs minister in early April sums up Trump's overall startegy on Iran since he came back into power in 2024. In a post on his X platform, Mr Aragchi said, "Every time a diplomatic solution is put on the table, Washington and its allies instead opt for reckless, military adventure and aggression".
In light of the above statement, we seem to notice a disturbing trend. Trump always stages talks between Iran and the U.S, makes excessive demands which no sovereign state can accept and only a few days into the negotiations, he declares the talks broken and uses this as justification for continued aggression on Iran. Then later on, a string of more sanctions is announced against Iran. More irksome even, are the reports in media that whenever a deal seems likely between the U.S and Iran, the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu makes a call to Trump and by day fall, the course of events seems to have changed suddenly from peaceful solution to continued aggression!
Lately, there have been reports that a framework has been reached on how to end hostilities between the United States and Iran, end the U.S and Iran blockade on the strait of Hormus and continue talks on Iran's nuclear program. This, only for Mr. Trump to set excessive pre conditions before his own blockade of Iran's ports can be lifted. Once again, there seems no possiblity of a deal in the near future. The Trump administration is even failing to agree on a framework for serious negotiations!
Looking at this pattern of aggression by the Trump administration on Iran, it seems like Mr. Trump is not even interested in making any agreement with Iran. It seems like his arrogant nature coupled with the arrogance of the United States as a super power country, cannot let him enter a reasonable agreement where Iran will have some form of leverage.
In President Trump's mind, for Iran to have some leverage during talks equates to concession from the United States and it also makes him personally look weak and failed.
As if Trump's arrogance is not bad enough, there is this obvious influence of Isreali Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Trump's decision making process. Netanyahu, who is known for viewing war as a solution to his political problems, seems to have a strong card over the way Trump perceives the situation in the Middle East.
The U.S president's disrespectful language about Iran is another obstacle to peace talks between The U.S and Iran. Whenever he is talking about the Iran conflict, President Trump is always bubbling about Iran raising "a white flag", always using words like capitualtion and in the midst of negotiations, he always makes threats of decimating the country, threatening to completely crush it economically and punish whoever decides to cooperate with the Islamic Republic.
This shows what exactly is going on the old man's head. The old man seems to believe that Iran is not even worth any deal with the United States. In addition to this, Trump seems to believe that Iran is too little a country to make the mighty U.S make concessions on some of its demands. (Don't forget that with all their might, the U.S together with Israel bombed Iran for over 40 days and failed to achieve their objectives in their military campaign).
It seems too, that Mr. Trump is not just here for Iran's nuclear program. All indicators show that Trump and Netanyahu's ulterior motive is to try and assert their hegemony over the Iranian nation. They both always openly talk about regime change in Iran and threatening to assassinate the remaining influential political and military leaders in Iran.
Mr. Trump seems to believe that instead of entering an agreement with Iran, he can strike and bully the Islamic Republic into submission to U.S rule over the Middle East and Israel's dominance in the region.
