Netanyahu breathes war. Iran's threats of attacking Israel are only a boost in his aggressive expansionist policy
It is a widely known fact that Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a war addict. Though he has always been an aggressive bull, it seems like lately, war has become a form of governance for his extremist government.
It is known too, that Benjamin Netanyahu loathes the idea of a peace agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Even back in 2015 when former U.S president Barack Obama oversaw the signing of a nuclear deal with Iran, Netanyahu vehemently opposed the deal claiming that it did not block Iran's path to nuclear weapons but rather, paved a way for it. He specifically pointed to the provisions in the agreement that would expire over time.
Moreso, Netanyahu claimed that the lifting of sanctions would provide Iran with financial freedom, allowing the Islamic regime to increase funding regional proxy groups.
Recently, when president was trying to broker another nuclear deal with Iran, Benjamin Netanyahu sabotaged the negotiations by launching operation "Raising lion" on the Islamic Republic. Since then, whenever there seems to be possibility of a peaceful end to Iran's nuclear crisis, the world wakes up to news of fresh military aggressions on Iran under the guise of failed negotiations, all under the strong influence of Benjamin Netanyahu on U.S president Donald Trump's policy on Iran.
Israeli Prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
Netanyahu is so engrossed in his vision of having the Middle East region under his control that he won't let up on his ambition to destroy Iran and its proxies around the region. Apparently, given its open negative stance against Israeli hegemony in the region, a strong Iran is currently the only obstacle of the so called "Greater Israel" project. Therefore, Netanyahu will do anything to ensure that Iran never enjoys the stability of a peacefully thriving state.
Netanyahu loathes the thought of a sanction free Iran, as he fears that an economically thriving Iran will obviously help the Iranians to further advance their military and technological capabilities and potentially overtake Israel's dominance in the region. No wonder, during the latest assualt on Iran, Israeli and American forces shifted their focus of bombimgs from nuclear and military infrastructure to scientific installations including universities, science research and aero space reasearch centres.
Since the announcement of a ceasefire that halted a joint U.S-Israeli militraty campaign in Iran on 8th April, 2026, the Israeli prime minister has been trying to sabotage the relative calm in the region and get the U.S back to fighting Iran.
During the latest round of talks, Iran has been repeatedly claiming that a cessation of hostilities on all fronts in the region is part of the cease fire agreement that was reached between it and the U.S in April. By all fronts, Iran is particularly referring to the ongoing assault on Lebanon by the Israelis.
The latest war between Israel and Hezbollah began on March 2, 2026. The conflict erupted after Hezbollah launched a barrage of missiles and drones toward Israel as retaliation for the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the aggressive Israeli operations in Lebanon. Therefore, Iran claims that since Hezbollah only joined the war as a show of support to the Iranians, a comprehensive ceasefire should include Hezbollah too.
This of course is unacceptable to the U.S and Israel who officially designate Hezbollah as a terrorist group and longtime security threat to the northern settlements of Israel. Therefore, Israel has not let up on their assualt on Southern Lebanon despite occasional announcements of ceasefires between Israel and Lebanon.(Note that Israel is not at war with Lebanon as a state. Rather, it is at war with Iran's proxy group Hezbollah, which mainly operates in the South of the country. Why ceasefires are always only agreed with the state of Lebanon and not the resistance group, is a topic for another day).
Recently at the beginning of the month of June, Netanyahu publicly announced that he instructed the IDF to strike Hezbollah headquarters and targets in Beirut, stating that these areas would no longer be considered "out of bounds". For Iran, the attack on Beirut is a redline in Israel's constant violations of ceasefire agreements. For Netanyahu, this is mere expansion of Israel's borders in pursuit of its "Greater Israel" vision.
Moreso, as elections draw close in Israel, there is no way one can convince Netanyahu to cease the war against Hezbollah without "finishing the job" of eliminating Hezbollah and ensuring the safety of Israel's north. Failure to secure the northern boarder of Israel obviously has a negative toll on his re-election bid.
Besides that, many political analysts and critics widely argue that Netanyahu utilizes the ongoing regional conflicts to maintain his grip on power and mute domestic dissent. By keeping the nation on a permanent war footing, he somehow unifies a polarized public under national security imperatives while avoiding elections that could useat his government. His governing coalition is frequently on the brink of collapse due to internal disagreements and public dissatisfactions.
Observers note that launching and sustaining military campaigns often allows the Israeli public to rally around the flag of the country, which suppresses calls for immediate elections.
Therefore, despite warnings from president Trump not to proceed with attacks on the Lebanese capital, Netanyahu ordered the IDF to proceed with the attacks anyway. Subsequently, Iran attacked Israel in the evening of 8th June as a punishment for Israel's violation of the ceasefire.
Given the Israelis' ego, Netanyahu's insatiable appetite for war and its benefits to his political standing, the Israelis won't of course tolerate the humiliating status of being punched by Iran at whim.
Furthermore, any chance for war is salvation for war addict Benjamin Netanyahu. Therefore, Iran's threats of attacking Israel over its violation of ceasefires is a very welcome happenance to Netanyahu. For him, any "opportunity" for engaging in war is a welcome blessing that gives him better chance of tightening his grip on power. Moreover, any confrontation with Iran pushes the idea of a peace deal with the U.S further away from occuring.
Therefore, when Iran goes ahead and acts on its threats of attacking Israel, Netanyahu dances in jubilation.
